  • Remedial & Special Education

Remedial education (also known as developmental education, basic skills education, compensatory education, preparatory education, and academic upgrading) is assigned to assist students in order to achieve expected competencies in core academic skills such as literacy and numeracy.

On the other hand, Special education is specially designed instruction, support, and services provided to students with an identified disability requiring an individually designed instructional program to meet their unique learning needs.Special education teachers work with students who have a wide range of learning, mental, emotional, and physical disabilities. They adapt general education lessons and teach various subjects, such as reading, writing, and math, to students with mild and moderate disabilities. And more so all Special education differs from remedial education because the students in these programs lack the intellectual ability to perform in a class that teaches standardized concepts and subjects, and are designed specifically for students with special needs. An example of special education is the type of reading help that is provided to a student who is dyslexic.

Note: Remedial education can be designed for any students, with or without special needs; the defining trait is simply that they have reached a point, of under preparedness, regardless of why?For example, even people of high intelligence can be underprepared if their education was disrupted, for example, by internal displacement during civil disorder, home environment, abuse, etc.

Remedial programs that offer students special one-on-one attention are much more in demand. Many students today find it difficult to sit down and stay focused in class because the delivery of traditional lectures does not grasp the attention of all learning types.

    Need for Remedial Classes

There has been an upsurge in the number of children diagnosed with Special Learning Disability in the recent years. The high prevalence of LD in our population poses forth a need to identify, understand and manage such disorders in order to minimize their negative impact on the child’s academic and general functioning as well as on their parents and teachers.

We at Crossroads believe that - right diagnosis through assessment at the right time, and Remediation by qualified professionals, with the correct teaching aids will help bridge the gap in the child academic performance. Hence, boosting their confidence to perform normally.
